Favignana and Levanzo from Trapani: Boat Trip or Ferry?
Updated October 26, 2026 · 6 min read
Choose a boat trip if swimming coves and seeing both islands matter more than wandering alone. Choose the ferry if you want most of the day on Favignana, a proper lunch ashore and control over your return. Trying to visit Favignana and Levanzo independently in one day is possible only when the day’s connections align; it is not automatically the relaxed option.
What the organised day gives you
The Favignana and Levanzo day cruise lasts 8 hours. Its description includes swimming in coves, sea caves, Sicilian street food and a small group of no more than 12. That makes the boat itself part of the day rather than merely transport.
The compromise is island time. Stops are governed by the skipper, weather and the group. You see two islands and places reached best from the water, but you do not get an open-ended afternoon in Favignana town. Exact departure points, inclusions and cancellation terms belong on the booking page and should be checked for your date.
What the ferry does better
A ferry or hydrofoil is public transport. You select outward and return sailings, then spend the interval as you please. Published operator times vary by season and can change, so check the live timetable rather than building a day around an old screenshot. The crossing to Favignana takes about 30 minutes by hydrofoil and closer to an hour by conventional ferry, according to published schedules.
The ferry is the better choice for one island. Favignana has enough for a full day, and choosing it alone avoids watching the clock twice. Levanzo is smaller and quieter, but adding it requires a separate connection and a safe margin before the final sailing to Trapani.
Do not compare only the ticket price
The organised trip bundles the vessel, a planned route and the listed food or drink. Independent travel means adding every ferry leg, food ashore and any bicycle, taxi or local boat you choose. It may still cost less, but the comparison only works after you price the complete day.
Neither choice guarantees calm water. Excursion routes can change and public sailings can be disrupted in unsuitable conditions. If you are prone to seasickness, ask a pharmacist or doctor before travelling; on board, sitting near the centre and looking at the horizon may help.
A simple decision
- First visit and two islands: take the organised boat trip.
- Favignana at your own pace: take the ferry and stay on one island.
- Swimming is the priority: the excursion gives the clearest plan.
- You dislike fixed group stops: the ferry is the more honest fit.
For most first-time visitors with one free day, the small-group Favignana and Levanzo cruise is the easier choice. If the islands themselves matter more than time on the water, use the ferry and give Favignana the whole day.
