Marettimo by Boat from Trapani: Ferry, Caves and a Realistic Day Plan
Updated October 26, 2026 · 4 min read
Marettimo is the Egadi island for travellers who want mountains, a small harbour and a slower day, not the easiest checklist excursion. The practical plan has two separate parts: the scheduled ferry from Trapani and, if weather and time allow, a local boat circuit around the island. They are not the same ticket.
Ferry first, caves second
Check the operator’s live timetable for your exact date and buy a return that leaves a comfortable margin. Sailings and journey times vary by service and season. A ferry gets you to Marettimo; it does not automatically tour the sea caves or stop for swimming.
Local boat trips normally leave from Marettimo’s harbour and depend on sea conditions. Ask on the booking page what is included, how long the circuit lasts and whether there is enough time before your return ferry. Never build a plan around the last possible connection.
What to do without a boat circuit
The village itself is small and pleasant for a slow lunch and waterfront walk. Hiking paths climb quickly behind it, so a “short stroll” can become steep and exposed. Carry water, wear proper shoes and turn back early enough. If you want a serious hike, one night on the island is more sensible than squeezing it between two ferries.
Marettimo also differs from the more frequently visited Favignana and Levanzo. Those islands dominate the Egadi day trips from Trapani, while Marettimo rewards time and flexibility. Do not book a Favignana-and-Levanzo cruise assuming it quietly includes Marettimo.
Who should make it a day trip?
A day trip suits independent travellers who accept timetable discipline and can enjoy the village even if the cave circuit is cancelled. It is a poor choice if missing a swim stop would ruin the day, if someone struggles with boat transfers, or if a same-evening flight depends on the return.
The better decision
Choose a return day only when the ferry times create a generous window. Stay overnight when hiking, dinner in the village or weather flexibility matters. For a simpler full-day experience with lunch and swimming already structured, compare the Favignana and Levanzo boat options; Marettimo’s appeal is precisely that it is less packaged.
